History

The barrier islands of Cape May County, including Seven Mile Island where Borough of Avalon is located, formed approximately 14,000 years ago. Originally a juniper forest inhabited by Lenni Lenape Native Americans, the area was purchased by Aaron Leaming in 1722.

Known as Seven Mile Beach, it was used for cattle and timber before development. Borough of Avalon was incorporated on April 18, 1892, from parts of Middle Township. The town was named after the mythical island of Arthurian legend, with significant historical events including the 1890 shipwreck of the Commonwealth and the development of railroad connections in the early 1900s that boosted tourism.
